Local Produce in the dead of winter..........YOU BET!!! These local, organic, German Butterball potatoes are raised by Misty Meadows, traditional potato farming family from the St. John Valley, Maine. An uncommon find in a world of Yukons, Russets, and nameless ‘Round Whites’, these potatoes are anything but run-of-the-mill. When roasted, their crisp skin and melting insides have won them first prize time and again, most famously: Rodale’s Organic Gardening ‘Taste Off’. The French Acadian Dionne family raises them in a fertile river valley abutting Maine’s northern Canadian border. Despite being raised in isolation, these potatoes are shameless crowd pleasers. They can bake, mash, fry, stew, and steam with equal success –they descend from a European family of ‘butterless potatoes’, or potatoes needing no assistance for creaminess. Whether due to its superior eating quality or quirky, yet accurate name, German Butterball needs nothing to ‘make it’ in New England but a simple introduction.

A surprising drop in the U.S. corn and soybean crop sent grain prices surging to their highest levels in 2 years Wednesday. The price increases stoked concerns about higher food prices and tighter supplies of feedstock for food and biofuels.
